How to Introduce Yourself in a Job Interview (in English)

'Tell me about yourself' — interview-এর প্রথম প্রশ্ন, আর প্রথম impression। ভালো খবর: এটার একটা fixed formula আছে।

This guide gives you the formula, a model answer you can adapt, the 3 most common mistakes, and a drill to rehearse before the day.

Short answer

Formula (60–90 seconds): Present — who you are now (1 line). Past — one relevant experience or achievement (2–3 lines). Future — why this role, what you'll bring (2 lines). End with confidence, not an apology.

The 3-part structure

  • Present: 'I'm a final-year CSE student at RUET, and I've spent the last year building web projects.'
  • Past: 'For my final project, I built…' — one concrete example with a result.
  • Future: 'I'm excited about this role because… and I can contribute…'

Model answer (adapt it, don't memorise it)

'I'm Rahat, a BBA graduate from National University. During my studies I led a 4-person team for our marketing project, where we surveyed 100 shops in Mirpur — that taught me to talk to strangers and present findings clearly. I'm excited about this sales role because it rewards exactly that, and I learn systems fast.'

Notice: specific numbers, one story, forward-looking end. Write yours with your own facts.

3 mistakes to avoid

  • Life story from childhood — start from your present, not class 5.
  • 'Sir, my English is not good' — never apologise for English in an English interview.
  • Memorised paragraph recited at speed — interviewers hear it instantly. Speak from bullet points, not a script.

Quick exercises

Speaking drill

Partner drill: partner শুধু শুনবে আর ২টা follow-up প্রশ্ন করবে ('What was your role exactly?')। Follow-up-এর উত্তর দেওয়াই আসল interview skill।
